Choosing The Right Grass For Southwest Florida

Sodding Your Southwest Florida Yard Comes With Choices

Adding new sod or replacing old sod is a significant financial investment for any Southwest Florida homeowner.  There are specific grasses that are more suited for our area referred to as warm climate grasses.  Some of the most popular species of warm climate grasses are Bermuda Grass, St. Augustine Grass, Zoysia Grass, Centipede Grass and Bahia Grass.

Bermuda Grass

Bermuda grass loves full sunlight.  It tolerates traffic well.  It’s a high maintenance grass that requires frequent mowing.  It goes dormant in the winter and responds well with the re-introduction of water after a period of drought.

St. Augustine Grass

St. Augustine Grass is most commonly known as Floratam grass in Southwest Florida.  It likes shade and sun.  It’s tolerant to traffic.  It goes dormant in the winter.  It’s susceptible to disease if it’s over watered.  It’s popular choice because its lush and full.

Zoysia Grass

Zoysia Grass tolerates sun but is known for handling shady areas well.  It’s slower growing and takes longer to establish than other grasses.  It’s popular with folks that want a grass that is well manicured with a low pile – it actually looks like a carpet once its established.  It’s tolerant to traffic as well.

Centipede Grass

Centipede Grass is known for its apple or lime color.  It it also slow growing and takes a long time to establish.  It’s low maintenance.  It loves sun or partial shade.  It’s often found under large shady pine trees.

Bahia Grass

Bahia Grass is an all around good purpose grass.  It’s the most affordable and durable.  It’s wear resistant and resists diseases and insects.  It grows well in poor soils.  It’s drought tolerant.  It thins out after time and is not suitable for shady areas.  Bahia grass is often used in medians, swails and the outside perimeters of properties or easements.

The Most Common Grasses In Southwest Florida

The two most common grasses used in the Southwest Florida area are Bahia and St. Augustine (Floratam) grass.  Bahia is more affordable than Floratam but Floratam is a more lush product.  Zoysia grass is the next most popular species.
